The flagship, luxury cuvee of 100% Merlot from the innovative, visionary firm of Despagne, Girolate is a cutting edge, amazing tour de force in winemaking. The smoky, chocolaty, espresso, and mocha aromas are interwoven with gorgeous layers of black cherry and berry fruit. This full-bodied, unctuously-textured, layered wine has as much in common with a big Napa Cabernet as it does with a Bordeaux Merlot. Its soft tannin, low acidity, and serious concentration are amazing when you consider its humble pedigree.
Wine Advocate 92: "The fifth vintage of this luxury cuvée from the Despagne family, this wine is treated like a spoiled child, afforded the best barrels, and the best viticulture and winemaking. The 2005 is opaque ruby/purple, with chocolate and black cherry liqueur notes, rich, broad, medium to full-bodied flavors, and terrific purity and texture. This is an absolutely amazing over-achiever and a great effort in the vintage. Drink it over the next decade."
Wine Spectator 86: "Black fruit, with an earthy note. Full-bodied, with firm fruit- and mineral-coated tannins. Toasted oak on the finish. Fruity and juicy. Best after 2008. 580 cases made."
