In the 50s Luigi Pira decided to focus on grapes and wine, in the following decades he sold grapes and open wine to the biggest wineries in the area of Alba which sought after high quality products from Serralunga d'Alba. In the early 90s Gianpaolo, Luigi's son, started to take part in the winery management, and the wine quality became the key factor. Today Gianpaolo is flanked by his brothers Romolo and Claudio.
All the wine that comes from the historical vines of the family is bottled, the Nebbiolo grapes destined to the production of Barolo which come from the crus are processed separately for Barolo Vigna Marenca, Barolo Vigna Margheria, Barolo Vignarionda and Barolo Serralunga.
The wine-making process of Barolo Vignarionda takes place in horizontal fermentation tanks with temperature control for 12-15 days. The wine matures over 24 moths, partly in small wooden barrels and partly in large wooden barrels.
Intense garnet red color. The nose is complex, elegant, with hues that range from wild berries to sweet tobacco and to deep and enticing balsamic notes. In the mouth this wine is rich, balanced and with an extraordinary persistence.
Robert Parker 96: "Pira's 2004 Barolo Vigna Rionda (aged in 100% new French oak) opens with captivating aromatics that lead to a silky-textured palate of ripe red fruit. This medium to full-bodied Barolo offers exquisite purity and delineation with finessed tannins and an extraordinary sense of harmony. It shut down quickly in the glass and will require patience, but this is a stunningly pure Rionda in the making. It's nice to see Giampaolo Pira bounce back with this gorgeous Rionda after his disappointing 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."
