In the 19th century, the forefathers of Aldo Conterno emigrated to Argentina, but on account of various family vicissitudes they returned to Italy after a few years. It was then that Giovanni Conterno brought his family back to the small winemaking farm of his father Giuseppe in Monforte d'Alba and started helping him in the production of local wine.
The farmhouse “Poderi Aldo Conterno” is situated in Bussia, in the village Monforte d’Alba, which is the very heart of the typical wine area. At present, the farm, which vinifies exclusively its own grapes, consists of about 25 hectares of vineyard. Most of the ground, which is at an altitude of about 400 m. above the sea level, is located South South-West and it is made of more or less compact sand layers of grey-brown colour alternated with white and bluish calcareous marls.
Robert Parker 91: "Aldo Conterno’s 2004 Barolo is simply beautiful. A medium red, it presents a feminine expression of Nebbiolo in its perfumed, spiced red raspberries and cherries. This is a soft, accessible Barolo ideal for near and mid-term drinking that fully captures the essence of this great vintage. Beginning with the 2004 vintage, this wine includes fruit from 15-year-old vines in Colonnello, a vineyard with sandier soils that lies on the border with Barolo. In the past this fruit was used for the Langhe Favot but now it makes up about 30% of the blend for the Barolo. As a result this bottling now carries the Barolo designation rather than the Barolo Bussia name which was used for previous vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019."
Wine Spectator 91: "Plum and spice aromas, with undertones of meat. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and lots of ripe fruit. Needs time to mellow and come together. Very structured. From this vintage, 20 percent of the Nebbiolo grapes come from a vineyard in the Barolo commune, so this is no longer labeled Bussia Soprano. Best after 2011. 2,000 cases made."
